BURY SCHOOL WINS HOUSE FOR THE FUTURE CONTEST
A seven-strong team of Year 10 construction students from Broad Oak Sports College has triumphed in a House for the Future contest, jointly organised by Lowry Homes Plc, Bury Council and ConstructionSkills, the Sector Skills Council for the construction industry.
Over the past two years 133 houses have been demolished in Pimhole, Bury, to make way for new homes to be built which will be better suited to the needs of the local community.

Lowry will construct 104 new homes in Pimhole commencing in 2009, in partnership with Bury Council, assisting with the areas overall regeneration and providing employment and training opportunities for local people and companies. Lowry is also keen to promote construction as an employment choice for young people by developing links with local schools - the House for the Future competition is part of this process.

The competition was formulated to encourage students to consider the problems of building a range of features into a new house and considering the benefits from both the developers and potential purchasers viewpoints.

Four teams of students, two each from both Broad Oak Sports College and Castlebrook High School, spent a month preparing their presentations, which included building a 3D model of the house from technical drawings supplied by Lowry Homes, plus explaining how they would incorporate the following 5 important features into the construction process: - Designing out crime - Adaptations for disabled home buyers - Sustainability - Creation of local economic benefits - Consideration of most suitable construction materials

Each teams presentation was judged at a special event held at the New Kershaw Centre, Bury, on October 17th, with the winning team receiving a prize of an impressive trophy, plus JJB Sports, Virgin and cinema vouchers, from Councillor Peter Ashworth and Mrs Dorrie Burgess, The Mayor and Mayoress of Bury.

Speaking at the event Lowry Homes Training Coordinator, Jon Davis, who had originally briefed the students said: "Each of the four presentations was of a very high standard and the final result was extremely close, with each team putting in a lot of work both during and after school hours. Im sure both schools can be proud of the industry, imagination and dedication their students have demonstrated in preparing such interesting presentations the future of house building looks bright if it can rely on recruiting staff of their potential calibre".

Bury Councillor Ian Gartside, Executive Member for Learning, Skills and Employment, added: "One of the aims of the Pimhole Redevelopment Scheme is to increase training and employment opportunities. This House for the Future project has allowed young people to get a real taste of some of the skills they may have to use in a career in the construction industry, as well as gaining an insight into the business world through the eyes of a property developer. Hopefully this will give them a better understanding of the local social and environmental issues involved with the regeneration scheme taking place in Pimhole".

Rounding off the comments, Recruitment and Careers Advisor for ConstructionSkills in Greater Manchester, Richard Wadkin, said: "It is important that young people recognise the range of careers available to them in the construction industry and this project has given them a real taste of how designing and building works".
